There are a couple of reasons you might want to unlock your Blackberry Pearl; it may be that you just want to use a SIM from a different network in it, or perhaps you would like to sell your Pearl and realise that you will get a lot more money for it as an unlocked device.
Mobile phones are locked to one particular network so that they can keep your business. Whilst carriers claim that they provide subsidised handsets to their customers, especially those on contract, this is recouped within the first six months of the contract anyway.
It’s completely legal to obtain an unlock code for your cell; many people believe it to be unlawful but this isn’t the case. It’s illegal to change the IMEI number as this is carried out by people who have a blocked cell, which is a different matter entirely. Mobile companies block phones if they have been reported lost or stolen or if they are on a contract which hasn’t been paid. These also get placed on a central blacklist and the process is carried out in order to combat mobile phone fraud.
A SIM lock, on the other hand, is imposed on a phone so that it can only be used on a single network. You have the right, as the owner of the cell to get an unlock code so that you can use the phone on any network, in any GSM country. This is especially useful if you travel a lot as roaming charges are outrageously expensive and with an unlocked phone you will be able to put a local SIM into the mobile and use abroad cheaply.
Unlocking Blackberry 8100g Pearl phones is simple to carry out, as well as inexpensive, using unlock codes obtained from the internet. Before you choose a supplier, of which there are many, do a little research and make sure you choose a reputable company.
You can do this by checking out feedback on eBay or visiting mobile unlock forums and advice sites to find out the good, bad and downright ugly. Beware of sites that ask you to call them for a code as these tend to be premium rate lines that will cost you a fortune.
Once you have found a supplier, find and write down your IMEI number by keying in *#06# into your phone. The 15-17 digit number will be displayed on screen; make absolutely sure that you’ve written it down correctly as an incorrect number will lead to the wrong unlock code and if you put this in more than three times then your phone will be useless.
Once you have done this, enter your IMEI, country and network into the online form/email and then pay the fee. You should then receive your unlock code and comprehensive instructions such as below:
- Ensure a SIM Card is inserted
- Go to ‘Manage Connections’
- Click on ‘Turn All Connections Off’
- Go to ‘Options’
- Click on ‘Advanced Options’
- Click on ‘SIM Card’
- Type ‘MEPD’ (NOTE: you might need to type in caps, also letters will not appear on-screen but you will be presented with personalization screen, that will display 5 locks such as network, service provider etc)
- Type ‘MEP2′
- Enter the MEP2 code (CONFIRM you get “Code Accepted” message)
- *If you also have a MEP4 code, type ‘MEP4′ (you will be prompted to enter MEP code)
- Enter the MEP4 code (CONFIRM you get “Code Accepted” message)
- Reboot device by pulling out the battery
- Go to ‘Manage Connections’
- Click on ‘Restore Connections’
- Device is now unlocked
