The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 is part Sony Ericsson’s popular Xperia series of smartphones on the Android platform. Solidly in the middle range of the series, the X8 is notable for its integrated GPS which allows geotagging of photos with the location where they were taken. It also includes a digital compass app. The other notable app allows you to view updates from any of your social networks from within a single place.
You can access different social networks, but not different GSM networks, at least not the way the phone is sold. The cell phone carriers requested that Sony Ericsson put a SIM lock on the phone, so that you have to use the phone with the cell phone service provider that sold it to you. This is especially troublesome if you’re heading out of the country, and want to be able to use your phone with a local service provider.
There’s a way around that, however, and it’s perfectly legal and downright easy. Just enter the unlock code for the phone, and you’ll restore it to the unlocked state in which it was manufactured. The only difficulty is that each individual IMEI number requires a different mobile phone unlock code. Even if a friend offers you the mobile phone unlock code that unlocked their X8, don’t take it. Entering an invalid unlock code for the phone can permanently lock it!
To make sure you’re getting the correct mobile phone unlock code for your specific IMEI, your first step in unlocking a cell is to visit your current service provider, or call their customer support line. As long as you’ve been a good customer for the minimum length of time specified in your contract with them, they will usually give you any unlock codes you need.
If your service provider doesn’t want to help, there are other ways of getting the codes you need for unlocking cell phones. You can give your cell phone make, model, and IMEI number to any of a variety of third party vendors who sell unlock codes.
Then just stop in to any cell phone store and pick up a new SIM card that hasn’t been associated with your cell phone service provider yet. With SIM card and unique unlock code in hand, to unlock your phone just follow these steps.
1. Power off your phone.
2. Remove your existing SIM card, and replace it with the new SIM card for a different carrier.
3. Power on your phone.
4. The phone will ask for the SIM network unlock PIN.
5. Simply enter the unlock code you were given.
That’s all you have to do! Once you have unlocked the Xperia X8, you can choose from any of the available GSM network providers.
