The Samsung Admire is the Metro PCS specific version of the Samsung SCH-R720 smartphone running on the Android platform. The same phone is also available under the name the Samsung Vitality from Cricket Wireless. The phones were released in late 2011, and come with Wi-Fi, email, and an MP3 player, as well as a 3.2 megapixel camera. It is considered a mid-range smartphone, aimed at the student market and people who are new to smartphones. Because the phone is available only under carrier branded names, there is not as much consistency to what is known about the phone as for those Samsung phones available across carriers.
For example, it appears that the Samsung Admire (and Samsung Vitality), unlike most of the Android-based Samsung smartphones, only works on CDMA networks and not GSM networks. So it may not have a SIM lock. However, if it does, the procedure for unlocking it would be the same as for unlocking a Samsung phone in general. You’ll need one of the 8-digit Samsung specific unlock codes.
You may be able to unlock the Samsung phone for free. If you are a customer in good standing with Metro PCS or Cricket Wireless, they may help you with unlocking the Samsung phone if you call them or visit their store. Just explain that you’re travelling out of country, and want to be able to use your phone on a local network in the country you’re visiting. Being able to unlock a Samsung phone for free is better than having to pay for Samsung unlocking codes, so it’s definitely worth checking with your carrier. If they give you the unlock code, follow their instructions to unlock the phone.
If your provider doesn’t want to give you the Samsung unlocking codes, all you have to do is buy a SIM card and get your specific unlock codes from a third party vendor. The SIM card needs to be associated with a phone carrier other than your current phone carrier.
Once you receive the new SIM card and unlock code, you can simply follow these steps.
1. Power off your phone.
2. Remove your existing SIM card, and replace it with the new SIM card for a carrier other than the one which is your current carrier.
3. Power on your phone.
4. The phone will either ask you for your password, or warn you that you have an incorrect SIM card and tell you to insert the correct one.
5. If you receive the password prompt, simply enter the unlock code you were given. Otherwise, enter the following code string, where nnnnnnnn is the 8-digit unlock code you were given: #7465625*638*nnnnnnnn#
That’s all there is to unlocking any Samsung phone.
