You might be wondering, why unlock a cell phone? Your phone is shipped with a “SIM lock”. This restricts you to using your phone with the carrier from whom you bought the phone. If you want freedom of carriers by unlocking your cell phone, you’ll have to get a code that’s correct for your specific smartphone. The unlock codes become available roughly six weeks after the phone is manufactured. It is important to get the codes that match unique phones, identified by the phones’ IMEI numbers, in order to be able to reverse the SIM lock.

Unlocking a cell phone is safe. Why? These phones are originally unlocked; the carriers make the manufacturers add a SIM lock to slave the phone to their service. You’re just restoring the original settings. This doesn’t affect your warranty. Your phone will remain unlocked even if HTC rolls out an update to its software.  It’s risk free.

Here’s the main reason as to why unlock a cell phone: you will be able to save money when travelling. You can use your phone with a local carrier and avoid premium out-of-country fees from your carrier – if your carrier even provides service outside the country. Also, this will increase the resale value of your phone.

Call your carrier or visit their store and they’ll likely give you the code for your phone for free. Otherwise, the unlock codes for unlocking your cell phone can be purchased from third party vendors online.  They will request the details such as IMEI number and current cell phone provider to be able to provide the specific codes for unique phones.

You will need a SIM card associated with a different phone carrier, or not yet associated with any carrier. These don’t cost must, and are available from any cell phone store.

Once you have your new SIM card and the codes specific to your smartphone, just follow this procedure:

1. Turn your phone off.

2. Take out your existing SIM card. Replace it with the SIM card purchased from the local carrier. Snap on the battery cover.

3. Turn your phone on.

4. The phone will request a GSM unlock code. (Note: If this fails to happen when you turn the phone on, switch your phone to GSM mode and do the procedure again.)

5. Enter the unlock code supplied.

You are done.  Note: you can use any GSM carrier on your unlocked phone.
